SAY NO TO DRUG AND ALCOHOL ABUSE” : A
DAY WITH THE INMATES OF PERINTHALMANNA SUBJAIL
Athira.B.M, 5th year Pharm.D
Now a days drug and alcohol abuse has
become the easiest weapon to destruct developing nations including India. The
society has many black forces like the insurgents and terrorists who lure young
men and women into abusing narcotics and other controlled substances. An
increasing number of youth have become slaves to such drugs. Unless something
is done to stop this social harm, an individual, a society or even a country as
a whole will not be able to grow and flourish. So on this republic day, we
being the future of India, decided raise our voice against this act. As budding
clinical pharmacist, we came up with an idea to organize a one day awareness
programme on the “ Drug and Alcohol abuse” for the in mates of Perinthalmanna
sub jail, to give awareness on the deadly consequences of such abuse, because,
we thought a jail would be the best place to conduct this programme. As such programmes have not been
carried out much, we were really excited to see how the event would turn out to
be. We were eager to know how the inmates would respond to the class. However,
to our surprise they were all really co-operative and listened carefully
throughout the session with true interest and enthusiasm. We explained about
the most commonly abused substances, how these are abused, how a person becomes
addicted to them and the effects this addiction can have on the health and
future of the individual, family, economy, society and the nation. We also
mentioned about the various de addiction programmes available. At the end of
the session we also had direct interaction with the inmates and cleared their
doubts on this topic.
Overall it was a wonderful experience
and we are really satisfied for doing something valuable for our nation on the
republic day. Our Mahathmaji spent his entire life denouncing and campaigning
against drugs and alcohol abuse. Let us work together to build the nation of
his dream.
A REPORT ON BEING A PART OF MDA PROGRAMME FOR FILARIASIS,
Perinthalmanna.
We are glad that
we could use our participation in Mass Drug Administration [MDA] programme for
filariasis 2015 as a chance to render our service to the society. It was the
second time we were entrusted with MDA programme conducted by Government of
Kerala. Prior to the drug distribution an orientation class was conducted in
Taluk hospital, Perinthalmanna. Discussions on the importance of the MDA
programme in the district, essential details regarding the drugs to be
distributed(Albendazole and diethyl carbamazine citrate) including their side
effects and distribution of leaflets on filariasis were the major attractions
of the session.
We were divided
into small groups and allocated to different localities under the ASHA social
workers. Door to door distribution of drugs and counseling around the inmates
of the respective localities was provided .All the misconceptions and enquiries
of public regarding the drugs were clarified
during the counseling session. It was an
honour to arrange awareness classes in some localities, as a part of this
programme, which gained much appreciation as it helped in an effective
completion of the programme. Almost all the people were satisfied with our
counseling and were ready to take the drugs as instructed . A follow up survey was also conducted to
assess the level of impact of the programme. We
had to also face many questions regarding other drugs they are taking. It
was this enthusiasm of the public that left us motivated to organize more
community based programme. The motivation and cooperation of the public toward
our efforts is being the fuel for our
future journeys as a clinical pharmacist.
