Pharm.D students celebrate International women's Day-2013
STHREE
SAKTHIKARANAM-
A PROMISE IS A
PROMISE, TIME TO END VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN’
Jawaharlal
Nehru once said, ‘you can tell the condition of a nation by looking at the
status of its women’.
Yes, in this nation where democracy and socialism lie at its peak,
women’s role in the society still remains a big question mark……………
Many a times it’s the cruel and injustice mind of society that puts
women behind the bars of actual freedom. As quoted by Louisa Mary Alcott, ‘When
women are the advisor, the Lords of creation don’t take the advice till they
have persuaded themselves that it is just what they intended to do; they act
upon it and if it succeeds, they give the weaker vessel half the credit of it;
if it fails they generously give herself the whole’.
Still it appears that there is no clear
public understanding of realities of women and girls lives in this patriarchal
society.
The United Nations instituted International Women’s Day to commemorate
the contribution of women in the socio-political sphere as well as in global
peace and security. In 1975, during International Women’s Year, the UN began
celebrating International Women’s Day on 8 March. The decision to observe an
International Women’s Day happened in 1910 at second International Conference
of Working Women held in Copen Hagen.
In connection with the celebrations, a seminar and panel discussion was
held in Al Shifa College of Pharmacy. We had very eminent and elite
personalities from various walks of life taking part in the programs. It was
inaugurated by 10:30am in the aptly decorated academic hall of the college.
The welcome
address was delivered by our very supportive college Principal- Prof (Dr)
T.N.K. Suryaprakash Sir. He reflected upon the theme of this year’s Women’s
Day, which is ‘A PROMISE IS A PROMISE, TIME TO END VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN’. He
also announced the formation of a Women Development Cell in the college, with
Mrs. Smitha Rani as its President and Mrs. Shebina Rasheed as the Secretary.
This was followed by the Presidential address by our very inspiring leader, our
Managing Trustee-Mr. P. Uneen. He quoted writer Sugatha Kumari’s inspiring
message about Women’s Day. He also talked about the role of the society in the
upliftment and development of women. The Inaugural address was delivered by a
very lawful authority-Mr. K. Subramanyam. He gave a remarkable talk upon
various themes promoted by the UN on Women’s Day for the past few years such as
the 2009 theme being ‘MEN AND WOMEN UNITED TO END VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND
GIRLS’ and the 2012 theme ‘EMPOWER RURAL WOMEN. END POVERTY AND HUNGER’. He
also remarked the observation of Nov 19 as International Men’s Day. In his
felicitatory speech, Mr. Joshy Joseph,General convenor, strongly spoke about
the need of the society to change and be more humane. In his felicitatory
speech, Mr. Aboobacker, Convenor, Thanalkoot said that women in India have seen
their social positions rise and fall in accordance with the policies of
prevailing rulers. History is the witness to the fact that during many reigns,
queens had greater power and influence than any of the courtiers. Mr. Mohammed
Sauf Anam, our college union Chairman finally felicitated the gathering by
telling women should have the self-confidence and courage to fight for her
rights and she isn’t subordinate to anyone, and their should be a fire for
justice in their hearts. Finally Dilip Sir-our very encouraging and dynamic
Professor gave a few words as vote of thanks mentioning that it is a day to
celebrate the spirit of ordinary women who have played extraordinary roles in
shaping their families, communities, societies and countries.
The panel discussion began by 11:45am. Mr. C. Narayanan, Press Club
President was the moderator of the discussion. Justice. Narayanan Kutty Menon,
Rtd Dist Judge , Prof. Gowri, Social activist, Prof. K. P. Mohammed Haneefa,
Vice Principal, Mrs. Smitha Rani, Women Development Cell President took part in
the discussion.
Mr. Narayanan began the discussion by expressing his views upon the
current condition of women in the society which lead to a full throttle
discussion about the horrendous stories of dowry deaths, stories of female
infanticide, women in small towns and villages being victimized by powerful
figures of community and their families. Smt, Gowri exerted her opinion that
the girl child must have the right to birth, right to development etc. She must
also be given the right to education instead of forcing her into an early
marriage. Dt. Judge Sir cited the examples of the Suryanelli case and the Delhi
rape case where the innocent victims, being women are robbed of justice, he
also suggested that the enquiry into these cases must be carried forward to
ensure justice, and they must be in a scientific way, not influenced by
politics. The very unavoidable audience well participated in the discussion
giving their very valuable suggestions and viewpoints regarding the various
issues being discussed. Further, the importance of sex education was commented
upon. It was of everyone’s opinion that it should be taught healthily in
schools. Towards the end of the discussion, the role of women in the household
and the society was thought upon. The program came to an end with the
presentation of few mementos and the National Anthem was recited.
It
was certainly a red letter day in the history of Al Shifa College of Pharmacy to
be remembered.
‘Na Sthree Swathanthryam Arhathi’ –
its time ahead we think whether we have really let women out into the world
with all the freedom to achieve their aspirations…….. Should these lines
anymore prevail in our society!!!!!
