To strengthen the
initiatives of the council and the educators towards comprehending the new
facet of Pharmacy-Pharm.D programme, the Indian Association of colleges of
Pharmacy (IACP) organises pharmacy practice modules in various parts of the
country. Al Shifa College of Pharmacy had been bestowed with the glorious task
of organising the Pharmacy Practice Module-Advanced Learning Series-8 with
emphasis on Gastrointestinal & Liver disorders. The module was conducted in
the grandiose venue of Shifa Convention centre in Perinthalmanna, Malappuram
form November 5 to 7 with the programme getting overwhelmingly positive reviews
from all the delegates turning it into another jewel in the crown of Al Shifa
College of Pharmacy. Though there was maximum effort to restrict the number of
entries, the attendance rocketed to a total greater than 300 delegates.
The event started with
the inaugural function on 5th November and was beatified by the
presence of prodigies of the profession. The event was inaugurated by Dr. B.Suresh,
President of Pharmacy Council of India and the chief guest of the function. The
other dignitaries included Prof.K. Chinnaswamy (President of IACP), Mr. P.Unneen(Managing
trustee - Al Shifa College of Pharmacy), Dr. Krishnakumar (International Co-ordinator
of IACP), Dr. B.Jayakar (Principal-
Vinayaka Mission’s College of Pharmacy), Dr. T.K Ravi (Principal- SRIPMS,
Coimbatore) and the resource persons Prof. Michelle.T.Martin and Prof. Sharon
See.
After the inaugural session and a majestic
lunch, we had the session dealing with Biopharmaceutics and Pharmacokinetics
which was skilfully delivered by Dr. Krishnakumar, Professor of
Biopharmaceutics and Pharmacokinetics at the College of Pharmacy, Washington
DC, USA. Starting his topics from the basics, he gradually enhanced the levels
like a skilful tactician and empowered our understanding of the topics to a
whole new vista. In the evening, we had a delicious banquets not only for our
stomach, but also for our eyes and ears through the Cultural programmes performed
by the students of our college which included Mohiniyattam, Bharatanatyam,
group song, group dance, melodious solos
and orchestra.
The next two days, we
had a series of sessions which dealt with the various gastrointestinal and
liver disorders and their therapies. The sessions were handled by Prof Michelle
T Martin, Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice, College
of Pharmacy, University of Illinois at Chicago, USA and Prof. Sharon See, BS,
Pharm.D, Associate Clinical Professor in the Clinical Pharmacy Practice
Department at St. John’s University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences,
New York, USA; truly two giants in their profession. The sessions were vibrant
and interactive with the duo leading us to explore into the different facets of
the therapy and even dealt with therapies which are awaiting approval, but are
sure to be on the go.
The overall quality of
the programme was taken to a higher notch by the leadership and organisation of
Al Shifa College of Pharmacy that reaffirmed the fact of our in-built practice
to take the standards of the programmes we organise to whole new dimensions. It
was something that was unanimously agreed on by all the delegates when asked by
our principal during his vote of thanks. Surely, it was an unique experience
for the students of our college, not only on the basis of the academic
knowledge we got from the seminar, but also the amount of organising and
leadership knowledge that we got by getting a first-hand visual experience of
our management, principal and faculties in action to bring about the success of
the module.
