INTERSHIP EXPERIENCE AT APOLLO HOSPITALS BANGALORE

INTERSHIP EXPERIENCE AT APOLLO HOSPITALS BANGALORE
In our final year of Pharm.D, we got a great opportunity to do 3 months of our internship programme at Apollo Hospitals, Bangalore. The hospital is equipped with all the latest infrastructures and amenities along with many specialized departments to handle the most complex medical cases. The Clinical Pharmacy Department is a very integral part of the hospital. There were in total 16 well trained Clinical Pharmacists. The major activities of a pharmacist include intending and prescription audit. In intending, the medications prescribed by the doctor were checked and uploaded into a system before it reached the patient. In prescription audit, a pharmacist goes and checks the drugs in the patient file and make sure that everything is in order. This is double checked again to see if the medication is administered properly along with medical chart review which is based on evidence based medication practice. On average, a pharmacist audits around 20 patients a day. If any error was identified, it would be brought under the Physician’s notice and necessary changes would be made. During our stay, we were posted at General Medicine, Pediatrics and Oncology. The oncology department is very renowned and so was a great experience. We were allowed to observe the works which helped us in our acquisition to become a better Clinical Pharmacist. All the works done were in a systematic manner. The ‘On call Pharmacy Service’which worked 24/7 handled a lot of pharmacy related enquires for health care personals and Physicians.
The phenomenal 3 month’s at Apollo gave us a better insight into works and responsibilities of a Clinical Pharmacist and learn new skills as takeaway which will help us contribute better in patient care.
