Editorial-Vol 5, issue-4 2015, Oct-Dec 2015

Change is inevitable in a progressive society and we need to embrace the change since change is occurring in every sphere of pharmacy. Pharmacist is playing a vital role in the society in protecting the patient from any kind of disease by educating them on the use of prescriptions and over-the-counter medications and also by keeping them alert about the possible drug interactions. As trusted medication experts, it is high time a pharmacist must be actively involved/participating in advising physicians, nurses and other health care professionals on medication therapy decisions. This will ensure positive outcomes from the use of medication, which improves patient’s quality of life with minimum risk.Pharm D interns have returned from their three month internship programs held at: Indraprastha hospital, New Delhi; Fortis  health care, Bangalore; Aster Medcity, Cochin and KIMS hospital Trivandrum. Their experience proves that the role of a clinical pharmacist keeps on expanding and we need to embrace new practice models. Team work and collaboration are necessary to advance pharmacy. Department of Pharmacy practice, ACP have already made good collaboration with these hospitals and readers can have a glimpse of the experiences of intern students in this issue. I congratulate Mr Augustine Xavier, Pharm D Intern,  who got First Prize for his poster on 'Prescription Adalath' presented in IPC 2015 held at JSS COP Mysore. Mr Mammen Paul deserves special mention, since he bagged second prize for his poster titled- Revamping Pharmacovigilance through Adr software.I applaud all the students who actively participated in Government’s safe Shabarimala program for 10 days from January 1st- January 10th 2016 at 23 different Emergency Medical Centres located on route from Pamba to Shabarimala. Indeed a proud moment for the department since these budding pharmacists have saved 14 people from the verge of death by  providing much needed medical assistance. Antibiotic resistance is a global concern and hence our department organized a one-week antibiotic resistance awareness program among doctors and other health care professionals at the hospital. Prescription Adalath program was once again conducted under the leadership of Pharm.D Interns at Ernakulum railway station and was a huge success, which is evident by the overwhelming response received from the public. Last quarter, the department was busy with buzz of activities, organizing various CME programmes, clinical as well as social activities to enhance the basic skills of students in the area of Practice.Dr. R.S Thakur President, Federation of Indian Pharmacists’ Organizations has penned an article on the history and development of clinical pharmacy in this issue, which will be an interesting read for the readers.  Dr G.P Mohanta’s write up on the Topic- ‘Using Oral Rehydration Salts with Appropriate Osmolarity’ will add up to another good read. This issue of our newsletter will give you a glimpse of various innovative pharmacy programs/activities being conducted in our college like Development of E- formulary, Prescription Adalath program etc. to name a few.
2015 was a  very productive and successful year in terms of service, achievements and academics. The Results of M.Pharm and Pharm D students, achieved above 90% consistently throughout the past 7 years is indeed worth a mention. To add to our glory, our research publications have crossed more than 90 in numbers in reputed journals across the globe. These laurels, credits and outstanding achievements showcase the overall success of the department continuously for the past 8 years amidst all odds. I thank all my students and faculty for their enthusiasm, support and hard work in achieving this huge success!
With 2015 coming to a successful end, and as the new dawn begins, I wish all my readers a very happy, healthy and prosperous 2016.
