As we embark on a new year, I would
like to reflect on our achievements in 2013. Our focus on pharmaceutical
/patient care culminated last quarter of the year 2013 by development and
implementation of two software’s for the hospital and with many other
remarkable accomplishments. Software was developed and the same has been handed
over to the PTC committee. The
first guideline on Pediatric epilepsy from the Department of Pharmacy Practice,
under the guidance of Professor Linu Mohan, was brought out in last quarter. I
would like to acknowledge the excellent work of Mr.Linu Mohan and Miss. Femina
C.P, in preparing this guideline. IIIrdB.Pharm Students (9th Batch)
of Al Shifa College of Pharmacy, published a book titled ‘Pathophysiology and
Health Education – Quick Review of Pharmacy Students’.I applaud our
students for their sincere efforts and great work and I highly recommend this valuable resource to all Pharmacy
undergraduates as well as to university/college libraries.
Pharmacist’s day was
celebrated with great vigor by organizing massive awareness program in our
locality emphasizing the prevention of various epidemic diseases prevalent in
the community. One day exhibition and free medical camp was organized at
Alshifa hospital as a part of world diabetic day. My sincere and warm wishes to
Mrs.Danisha and Mrs. Sajitha (IIndM. Pharm) for bagging first and
third prize respectively for poster presentation at the two day National
Seminar held at Trissur.It is impressive to note that, for the past five years
the students of our department sustain this glory.

ACTIVITIES OF PHARMACY PRACTICE
DEPARTMENT IN COLLABORATION WITH ALSHIFA HOSPITAL.
1.Pathophysiology and
Health education, Quick review for Pharmacy students
To
provide excellent pharmaceutical care, the pharmacist must have a good
knowledge on all the basic aspects of diseases and its mechanisms. The book
titled “Pathophysiology and Health education, Quick review for Pharmacy
students” aims to be of benefit to second year B-Pharmacy students, as it is
structured according to the syllabus.
This extensive, user-friendly text is well organized and helps students
to understand the basic principles of human disease before going on to more
detailed study. Readers will gain a clear understanding of the pathogenesis of
various disease conditions and is ideal for the students with pharmacy
background. This book also has previous year question paper. And
simple diagrams, pictograms, flow charts, quoting standards like IS: 10500!
The book is structured very well and the material
is very well written, concise and easy to understand with short and informative introduction to
fundamentals, provides useful and updated information on clinical signs and
symptoms, etipathogenesis etc., in order to give readers a more comprehensive
view of human disease. We'd recommend this text book to anyone who is pursuing a career in pharmacy.
This commendable task was done by third B.Pharm
students (Ninth Batch) under the leader ship of Mohamed Samjas V.P, who is
highly inclined to academics.
2.Development of Formulary Softwares
Formulary
software was developed by Prof Dilip.C
for Alshifa hospital in the last quarter. Hospital formulary is a compilation
of various pharmaceutical preparations, reflecting current clinical judgment in
diagnosis, prophylaxis, treatment of disease and promotion of health. After the
successful publication of, hospital formulary second edition and Pediatric
formulary first edition, Dept of Pharmacy Practice developed two new soft wares for the
hospital. The software are first of its kind in kerala and the same has been
installed in the central pharmacy server for the benefit of health care
professionals.

PAEDIATRIC EPILEPSY’ GUIDELINE
It
is heartening to note that one of the faculties of the Department of Pharmacy
Practice, Mr. Linu Mohan, Assistant Professor, has come out with ‘Paediatric
Epilepsy’ guideline which is the need of the hour.
Epilepsy is one of
the dreaded diseases.& its prevalence at younger age is more. The reasons for the development of the
disease, the diagnosis and treatment in practice adopted have been well
explained by the author.
Even though perinthalmanna is a hub of Hospitals, It is well known fact that
the pediatric epileptic care in this locality is suboptimal and more care needs to be done to improve clinical
standards. Appropriate diagnosis and
management of childhood epilepsy is essential to improve quality of life in
these children. Evidence-based clinical
practice guidelines on pediatric epilepsy, modified to the Indian setting by a
panel of experts, are not available .hence this Guideline from the Dept
of Pharmacy Practice is timely,
and the guideline encompasses important recommendations, new & developing
aspects and concepts about pediatric epileptic care to raise the QOL of patients with paediatric
epilepsy
4 Staff Development Programme
As a part of staff
development programme organised by National College of Pharmacy, Mukkam from 18th
to 28th November 2013, Mr. Jasim sabith, Asst Prof, Dept of Pharmacy
Practice, have attended various sessions of eminent personalities from both
academic and industry side. All the speakers tried to stick on the programme
theme "Recent Trends in Drug Discovery and Development"
through various topics like drug discovery, formulation development, analysis
of drug moiety, clinical pharmacy and pharmacy practice etc.
The entire programme
was informative and useful for pharmacy professionals to know about new trends
and different stages of drug discovery and its development
