Involvement of Dept of Pharmacy Practice in WORLD ELDERS DAY organized by IMA- OCTOBER, 1 2013

The IMA National Committee for care of elderly in collaboration with Al shifa Hospital organized a weeklong national level commemoration on world elders day 2013 during the days from 25th September to October 1st 2013. The programme was hosted by IMA Perinthalmanna branch. The programme mainly focused on the aspect that elderly people always require emotional attention from their families or children as they are very vulnerable to physical as well as psychological imbalances. The “new generation” sense of relationships provides least botheration towards the older adults and their psychological bond towards society, family and children. The week long ceremonies included awareness classes, seminars on disease management and care for elderly, procession through the town with active participation of social workers and health care providers for creating social awareness on elderly people’s needs and necessities. A quiz programme was also conducted for the students of various teaching hospitals. Dr. VU Seethi, National chairman, committee for care of elderly, Dr. KA Seethi, organizing chairman, Dr. Samuel Koshy programme convener and Dr.Abeer, Al Shifa Hospital were the pioneers in making the programme a grand success. The quiz competition was mastered by Dr.Mohanakrishnan, MIMS hospital Kottakal, and Dr. Girish Raj was the convener of  the competition. One of the ongoing projects in the department of pharmacy practice under geriatric pharmacy which is entitled –‘Evaluation of potentially inappropriate medication using Beer’s criteria and guideline preparation for drug use in geriatrics’ was well benefited from the disease management classes by consultant physicians. The IMA division must be praised for their painstaking effort of organizing such a noble venture as care for elderly has now become an alarming aspect seeking social attention.
