A Short Course in Biostatistics:
Sample Size Calculation was held at Biostatistics Resource and training centre
at Department of Biostatistics in CMC Vellore from December 12-13. The course
was aimed at enhancing the competency of medical researchers in the Sample Size
determination, which is the first step towards a successful research work. It
was attended by Mr. Levin Thomas, Asst Lecturer (Department of Pharmacy
Practice), Mr. Vikas P.V, Pharm.D(P.B) Intern and myself, Abin.C from 5th
year Pharm.D.
Our interest in this field of
biostatistics was rooted from the fact that we felt handicapped frequently when
beginning our academic research and project works due to the inadequacy of our
knowledge and experience in sample size calculation. We had to carry out our
works on the basis of same sample size as seen in the journal articles which we
referred which itself might have been methodologically incorrect due to flaw in
sample size.
The training programme was held in
the Biostatistics Resource and Training Centre inside the CMC Campus at Bagayam
under the co-ordination of Dr.LJayaseelan, a personality with a lifetime of
experience in the area of Medical research and Biostatistics. Our stay at the
venue was arranged at the CHTC donated by Govt of Denmark.The classes started
at 9am on 12th December and were handled with utmost dexterity by
Dr. L Jayaseelan, Mr. Saravanan, Ms.Thenmozhi and Dr. Visalakshi on the topics
of Introduction and estimation problems, hypothesis testing, Clinical Trials,
Diagnostic test and Agreement, Cluster Design, Survival Analysis, Epidemiologic
Methods and Regression Methods. During the sessions, we were also introduced
into applying the same theories into practice through the n-Master 2.0 software
for sample size determination which is bound to be an essential arm in the
arsenal of a medical researcher and we feel lucky to get such a prestigious
opportunity for participation in the training.
We extend our gratitude towards Dr.
L. Jayaseelan for providing us this unique opportunity to participate in the
training and we look forward towards participation in further Biostatistics
training programmes organized under his authority in CMC Vellore.
