RESEARCH METHODOLOGY IN HEALTH SCIENCES
“A Burning Desire Is The Starting Point Of All Accomplishment”. The Kerala medical services corporation limited (KMSCL) was established with a responsibility of ensuring access to medicines and to establish scientific and cost effective methods and procedures in activities like procurement ,storage,distribution,and usage of medicines in the state of Kerala. The KMSCL with the aim to promote and conduct research projects related to medicines and their usages, and also to promoting and encouraging research activities among PG, researchers and teachers introduced KMSCL INSTITUTE FOR DRUG STUDIES (KIDS).
     ON 17TH JUNE, 2013 KIDS organized a one day seminar on the topic “RESEARCH METHODOLOGY IN HEALTH SCIENCES” at government medical college, Thiruvananthapuram, with an aim of making the empanelled research fellows and research associates of KIDS familiar with certain aspects of research in health care. The whole programme was divided into 8 sessions along with a parallel session. We were so blessed to attend such an enlightening seminar which was blessed by the presence of very intellectuals and respected scientists and professors.
     The pre –inauguration session had Dr.C.P SHARMA, Head, Biomedical technology division, Sree Chithra Thirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology as the speaker on the topic “PREPARATION OF PROJECTS AND PROTOCOLS FOR FUNDED PROJECTS”. He said that projects and protocols are a result of group spirit and he pointed out that ”SEA WAVES APPEAR INDEPENDENT, BUT ARE INTEGRATED TOGETHER “which means we all appear independent but are interdependent on one another.                                        
        The pre inauguration session was followed by the most important part of the seminar “INAUGRAL FUNCTION” .The inaugural function was started with prayer song . It was followed by lamp-lightening by Sree K.M. CHANDRASHEKAR, Vice Chairman, Kerala State Planning Board ,followed by welcome speech by DIRECTOR of  KIDS Dr.K.G RAVIKUMAR and presidential address by Managing Director KMSCL Shri R.KAMALAHAR IFS.
      On this very auspicious occasion, Mr.HARI PRASAD, Drug Controller of Kerala handed over the study report on “FAILURE OF SSI UNITS IN KERALA TO BECOME EFFECTIVE SUPPLIERS OF MEDICINES TO KMSCL”  to respected Sri R.KAMALAAHAR IFS, Managing Director, KMSCL.
       The programme continued with the key note address from Prof V.N RAJASEKHARAN PILLAI, Ex-officio Principal Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology, Government of Kerala, and we were so lucky to have Dr.B ASHOK IAS, who was the guest of honor of the function. Then came the felicitatory speeches administered by Dr.IPE VARGHEESE, Registar, KUHS, DR.A.V. GEORGE, Sree Chithra Thirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology and MR.B. RAJAN, President, Kerala State Pharmacy Council. The inaugural function then came to an end with the vote of thank by MS.PRIYA NAIR, Deputy Manager, Community pharmacy services, KMSCL.
   The most blessed session that we had was the second session handled by DR.TINY NAIR, Head of the department of Cardiology, PRS hospital, Thiruvanathapuram about “INTERPRETING CLINICAL TRIALS”. He just took  us to the world of clinical trials where he mentioned about different phases of the clinical trials, use of evidence based medicines.
 Next we moved on to two extra ordinary lecturers in third session. We heard a class about the “CLINICAL RESEARCH AND METABOLIC SYNDROME “by respected DR.V .JAYPAL, Cardiologist, LORDS hospital Thiruvanathapuram, where he explained about the risk factors, diagnosis and management of metabolic syndromes and clinical researches associated with it.
 This class was succeeded by a class administered by DR. DINESH ROY .D, CEO, Genetika-Center for Advanced Genetic Studies, Trivandrum who introduced us to various chromosome abnormalities, their prenatal diagnosis through his topic “APPLICATION OF CYTOGENETIC TECHNIQUES IN HEALTH CARE RESEARCH STUDIES”.
                            In the afternoon (5th session) we were gifted to have DR.S. RAJASHEKARAN, Senior project Consultant and Former Director Grade Scientist JNTBGRI, Palode, Trivandrum who informed us about the health system in Kerala. He also pointed out that in this century of life and health sciences multidisciplinary integrated researches will contribute much in health care system in states where the population is not able on one hand to realize aspiration and on the other hand to satisfy the needs of the population, through his topic “IMPORTANCE OF MULTIDISIPLINARY INTEGRATED RESEARCH IN HEALTH CARE”
  The sixth session was taken by DR.ESWARA SARMA on “Scope of Collaborative Research”, where he mentioned that innovation in the field of health, from the side of new generation was trivial  in a place  like Kerala where  ayurveda is practiced in its purest form.
 From the seventh session we came to know about an organization CARE-KERALA - a mile stone for our future health care system, is a venture of ayurvedic cluster. It was DR.JOY VARGHESE, Technical Director, Care Keralam, Ernakulam, who introduced the role of Care Keralam in promoting research in health management. The venture promotes home stay for patients with chronic disease along with treatment.
The seventh session ended with a very effective session about life threatening disease AIDS by MR.T.A MAJEED, on his topic “RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LEUKAEMIA AND AIDS”.
  Being PHARM-D students we were looking forward for the upcoming session  where PHARM-D  students were separated from the other audience .It was under the leadership of  MR.B.RAJAN, President, Kerala State  Pharmacy Council and DR.K.G. RAVIKUMAR, Director, KIDS, that an open discussion on the topic “GUIDELINES FOR CONDUCTANCE OF PHARM-D COURSES IN KERALA AND ACCREDITATION OF HOSPITAL PHARMACIES” was conducted .They opened to us a world of scopes, duties, future and responsibilities of  Pharm-D through this session. At the same time a parallel session under the leadership of  MR.PRADEEP, Assistant, Drugs Controller, Ernakulam, a seminar was conducted on topic “KIDS STUDY REPORT ON FAILURE OF SSI UNITS IN KERALA TO BECOM E EFFECTIVE SUPPLIERS OF MEDICINES TO KMSCL” to the other audience. The programme was concluded by certificate distribution by SHRI KAMALAHAR IFS, Managing Director, KMSCL
  It was an unforgettable learning experience altogether and lastly to mention we were thankful to all the co-coordinators of the function .We also thank Malayalam news channel, MANORAMA NEWS, who prepared a news clip about the programme that made aware many people about the course ,it’s future and various other aspects.
